Heritage Plastering

Traditional lime work that respects the fabric and character of an older building.

A finish built
around the project.

Older properties need an approach based on their construction and condition. Morphey Plastering works alongside our specialist sister business, Suffolk Lime, on lime plastering, rendering and heritage projects across Suffolk and Norfolk. Quaker Barn and Wenhaston illustrate different settings for that work.

Understanding the existing building

Retained surfaces, timber, masonry and previous repairs all influence the proposed work. The condition of the background and the route moisture takes through a building should be understood before choosing a replacement finish. Sound historic material should not be removed simply to make every surface look new.

Lime plastering and rendering

Lime-based materials can form part of a compatible repair approach for traditional construction. The binder, aggregate, strength and finish need to suit the background and exposure. “Breathable” does not describe an entire specification, and it does not mean a wall can compensate for an unresolved leak.

Timber, laths and transitions

Exposed framing, retained laths and changes of background need careful detailing. At Quaker Barn, the confirmed scope includes lime plastering to ceilings and between exposed roof timbers. The exact wall build-up and products for that case study remain under review; they are not used here as a universal method.

Planning the works

Access, protection, drying and the timing of subsequent finishes all affect the programme. Where the building is listed or subject to consent requirements, the agreed repair scope should be checked before work starts. We do not imply a conservation accreditation or consent authority.

A few useful questions

How is Suffolk Lime involved?

Suffolk Lime is our specialist sister business for lime and heritage work. We can discuss which team and scope best fit your enquiry.

Can an older wall simply be covered with a modern finish?

That depends on the construction and condition. The compatibility of repairs and finishes should be assessed rather than assumed.
