Damp Proofing & Damp Coursing

Understand the moisture problem before deciding how to repair the finishes.

A finish built
around the project.

Damp symptoms can arise for different reasons. An appropriate approach starts with the building, the moisture source and the condition of the affected fabric. Westleton photographs are included as work-in-progress records; they do not establish an exact treatment system.

Start with the cause

Water entry, ground levels, plumbing, ventilation and the existing construction may all need consideration. Staining or a meter reading alone should not be used to assume a diagnosis. Where the cause is unclear, appropriate investigation may be needed before a treatment or replastering scope is agreed.

Damp courses and compatible repairs

A damp-course intervention, membrane, render or replastering treatment should only follow a justified specification. An older solid wall may require a different response from a modern cavity wall. We do not assume that an injected course or an impermeable lining is suitable for every property.

Preparing and reinstating surfaces

Once a repair approach is agreed, the condition of existing plaster, salts and backgrounds affects the reinstatement. Removing damaged material and making good must be coordinated with the cause of the moisture. A new finish alone cannot be presented as a cure for an unresolved defect.

The Westleton example

The available images show internal work in progress at Westleton. The precise damp-course method, products and final results still require confirmation. No specialist accreditation, insurance-backed guarantee or fixed guarantee term is claimed for this project.

A few useful questions

Will replastering solve damp?

Only addressing the visible finish may leave the cause unresolved. The moisture problem needs to be understood before a repair scope is agreed.

Can you confirm the treatment from photographs?

Photographs are useful for an initial discussion, but they are not enough to specify a damp remedy or establish a warranty.

Historic England: investigating moisture. General guidance supports the discussion; it does not identify the products used on a photographed project.
